Trauma Therapies
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches. To date, EMDR therapy has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents impacted by trauma and their parents or caregivers. Research shows that TF-CBT successfully resolves a broad array of emotional and behavioral difficulties associated with single, multiple and complex trauma experiences.
Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) is an intervention for children and their parents who have experienced at least one form of trauma (e.g., maltreatment, the sudden or traumatic death of someone close, a serious accident, sexual abuse, exposure to domestic violence) and are presenting with different problems as a result. The primary goal is to support and strengthen the relationship between a child and his or her parent (or caregiver) in order to repair the child's sense of safety, attachment, and appropriate affect to ultimately improve the child's cognitive, behavioral, and social functioning.
Integrative Treatment of Complex Trauma (ITCT) follows standardized protocols involving empirically based interventions for complex trauma and includes multiple treatment modalities: cognitive therapy, exposure therapy, play therapy, and relational treatment in individual
and group therapy. Specific collateral and family therapy approaches are also integrated into treatment.
Integrative Treatment of Complex Trauma for Adolescents (ITCT-A) is an evidence-based, multi-modal therapy that integrates treatment principles from the complex trauma literature, attachment theory, the self-trauma model, affect regulation skills development, and components of cognitive behavioral therapy. It involves structured protocols and interventions that are customized to the specific issues of each client, since complex post-traumatic outcomes are notable for their variability across different individuals and different environments.
Families OverComing Under Stress (FOCUS). The FOCUS Program is a brief program for families contending with single or multiple trauma or loss events. It has been used widely as a stand-alone family intervention or as an adjunct to other individual, family or group services. Developed by a team from the UCLA and Harvard Medical Schools, the FOCUS Program provides a structured approach for joining with traditional and non-traditional families, crafting shared goals, and then working with parents, children and the entire family to bridge communication, practice specific skills that support family resilience, and make meaning out of traumatic experiences.
